Description

Julai (Telugu: జులాయి; alternative spelling: Julayi) is a 2012 Telugu film written and
directed by Trivikram Srinivas.[4] The film stars Allu Arjun, Ileana D'Cruz and Rajendra Prasad in lead roles. The film
was produced by S. Radha Krishna under Haarika & Hassine Creations Banner and was presented by D.V.V. Danayya. The
soundtrack was composed by Devi Sri Prasad, who previously worked with Trivikram on Jalsa. The film was officially
launched on November 2, 2011 and filming began on November 14, 2011.[5] The film was dubbed in Malayalam as
Gajapokkiri.[6]

The story of the movie is all about a
revenge saga between two witty men, Bittu (Sonu Sood) & Ravindra Narayan (Allu Arjun), whose paths cross during Bittu
goes on for the Robbery of 1500 Cr in the Vizag Co Operative Bank assigned by Political Leader Varada Rajulu (Kota
Srinivasa Rao) and Ravi goes to earn Money by Cricket Betting on the Indian Premier League Match Held that Night as Ravi
challenges his Father Narayana Murthy (Tanikella Bharani), who believes in hardwork earning which is Opposite to Ravi's
Mind Set.
To avoid the Police Interference, Bittu makes an Anonymous call to ACP Raja Manikyam (Rao Ramesh)
Informing the whereabouts of Cricket Betting. Ravi Convinces Raja Manikyam that Bittu is Planning to Rob and Both Go to
catch him. Bittu Successfully Robs the Bank and his Brother Laala (Shafi) takes the Money to the City's Dumping Yard
according to Bittu's Instructions as the Police Follow them. But Meanwhile Ravi Stabs Laala for Self Protection and he
dont know where the Money is Kept. Bittu is being transported to Jail but is rescued in transit by Devayani (Sheetal
Menon), a Deaf-mute but Intelligent Associate of Bittu and they go to Dumping Yard to collect the money but Bittu is
Shocked as the Dumping Yard is Burnt into ashes. Having his Brother dead and the Money Burnt, Bittu vows Revenge on
Ravi.
Raja Manikyam sends Ravi to Hyderabad from Vizag for the sake of Witness Protection Program to the House of
The Coward ACP Sitaram (Rajendra Prasad), who is always accompanied by Interrogation Specialist Valmiki (M. S. Narayana)
and a Petty Thief Babai (Bramhanandam). Ravi Joins Them and the four become Good friends. In Hyderabad, Ravi falls in
Love with Madhu (Ileana), a middle class Girl who works under Famous Travels Agent Travels Murthy (Bramhaji), an
associate of Bittu who is Preparing Fake Passports for the Gang to make them Escape From India. Ravi befriends Madhu and
Both Fall in Love with Each Other. Ravi steals Madhu's Card which leads Sitaram and Him to know all the details
regarding the Escaping of Bittu & Shockingly, Madhu is shown as Bittu's wife suffering from Vertigo only for Creating
Sympathy at the Airport without her Knowledge.
Ravi & Sitaram Chase Bittu to the airport where Bittu Plays a trick.
Actually according by the plan of Murthy Bittu must go t o Mumbai and from there to Dubai. But to confuse the Police he
goes on the Bangalore Route due to which Half of the Police go to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and others roam on
the Chennai - Vijayawada route. Ravi & Bittu Confront Each Other and Bittu Threatens to kill Madhu. Bittu Flight Time
Completes & Devayani forces him to leave while Madhu is being Saved by Ravi.
Now Bittu hiding in Hyderabad has 3
goals. They are to Murder Ravi & His Family and to Escape to Dubai. Ravi also has 3 Goals. They are to save his Family
from Bittu, Convince Madhu who is very Furious regarding him and to Murder Bittu. First Ravi tells his Family to come to
Hyderabad by Train and when they are about to reach the Railway Station, Ravi Tells them to Come to Hyderabad by Road,
which they accept. Due to this Bittu Men are Unable to catch them. Bittu goes to Varada Rajulu and Kills him. But before
Dying Varada Rajulu tells the truth that He and Raja Manikyam Have the custody of the 1500 Cr. Bittu Makes a deal with
Raja Manikyam and tries to trap Ravi. After the Patch up and Engagement of Ravi & Madhu at Sitaram's House, Raja
Manikyam leaves his Mobile there and tells that he spoke to Varada Rajulu that Morning to Ravi. While Ravi answers the
Call the Car gets Blasted and Ravi's Family is Kidnapped by Travels Murthy. Ravi is Imprisoned but is freed by Sitaram.
Ravi manages to save his Family but Travels Murthy shoots his Father. Narayan Murthy is in ICU and Asks Ravi To restore
back the 1500 Cr to the Bank.
Ravi & Sitaram team up and start Chasing the roots. Ravi's Sister is Kidnapped by
Devayani & Bittu takes both to Vizag. Travels Murthy is chased by Ravi and knows that Raja Manikyam is Alive but is
Killed by Bittu while Raja Manikyam demands his Share. A Devastated Ravi finds that the whole money is being transported
in 1 of 3 containers runned by Bittu to the sea port and by using his Wisdom he makes the right container stop before
the Vizag Co operative Bank and hence the money is restored. Bittu is Confronted by Ravi & Sitaram and is badly beaten
and threatened. Sitaram shoots Bittu while he tries to kill Ravi and by their last conversation, Ravi comes to know that
his sister and Devayani are at the Lighthouse of Vizag. He saves his Sister while Sitaram beats Devayani and makes her
faint.
Sitaram is a tough Cop now and atlast Ravi has a change of Mind and starts believing in Hard work. The
climax is shown as Ravi giving advice to a kid of the same mentality of Speedy Earning to leave the mindset and waiting
for a Bus to attend his Interview.

In 2010 after his film Khaleja was released, many
reports suggested that Trivikram would work with Venkatesh for his next film.[7] It was reported that the film would
start filming in Early 2011.[8] But due to unknown reasons, the project failed to take off. In March 2011, reports
suggested that Trivikram had approached Allu Arjun for a film and that Arjun has accepted the offer.[9] Also it was
reported that D.V.V. Danayya would produce the film under his Universal Media banner.[10] Dannayya previously made the
successful film Desamuduru with Allu Arjun.[11] It was also reported that Ileana was cast as the female lead and the
filming would begin in May 2011.[12] Although there were several reports on when the filming would begin, all proved
untrue. In August 2011, it was reported that Allu Arjun has injured his shoulder and went to Australia for surgery on
Trivikram's request.[13] This caused the project to be further delayed.[14] In September 2011, an official statement was
released by the producers stating that as Allu Arjun was in Australia for shoulder surgery, the filming would start in
late October 2011. It was also announced that the film is being produced by S. Radha Krishna under his Haarika & Hassine
banner and with D.V.V. Dannaya presenting it.[15] It was also announced that Devi Sri Prasad who had previously worked
with both Arjun and Trivikram would score the music. It was reported that both Allu Arjun as well as Trivikram had
slashed their remuneration for the film in a bid to bring the production cost down.[16] Finally on November 2, 2011
after months of getting delayed the film was officially launched.[17] It was announced that Ileana was cast as the
female lead and the other cast and crew was also announced. On November 14, 2011 filming began in Hyderabad. Although
there were many reports that the film was titled as Honey,[18] the director dismissed the reports saying that no
decision was taken. In March 2012, it was announced that the film was titled as Julai.[19]

It
was announced in September 2011 that Rajendra Prasad was cast for a vital role in the film. It was later reported that
Rajendra Prasad would be playing the role of a cop in the film.[20] It was also announced that Sonu Sood was cast as the
antagonist in the film. The other cast includes popular Telugu actors like Kota Srinivasa Rao, Brahmanandam, Tanikella
Bharani, M. S. Narayana, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, Brahmaji and Rao Ramesh. It was reported that Mahesh Babu would
provide voice over for the film similar to Trivikram's Jalsa.[21] It was reported that Udayabhanu has turned item girl
again for Allu Arjun in this movie[22]

After months of delay, filming began in Hyderabad on
November 14, 2011. Scenes between Brahmanandam and Ileana at a hospital in Kukatpally were canned during the first
schedule of filming. The second schedule of filming began on December 13, 2011. Filming took place at Ramoji Film City
and Sivarla in Hyderabad.[23] In January 2012, action scenes in shivering cold weather were canned at RFC under the
supervision of Peter Hein.[24] In February 2012, bank robbery scenes were shot on Allu Arjun and Sonu Sood in
Hyderabad.[25] Also in February 2012, more action scenes on Allu Arjun were canned at Chennai Port under Peter
Hein’s supervision.[26] In March 2012, filming took place in Visakhapatnam, Andhra pradesh.[27] On April 6, 2012,
it was reported that filming of the entire talkie part has been completed and four songs are yet to be canned.[28] On
April 20, 2012 it was reported by 123Telugu that the production unit would be traveling to Dubai on April 26, 2012 to
film two songs on the lead pair and the remaining two songs would be shot in India.[29] On June 9, 2012 fire broke out
in a special Irani Hotel set, that was erected for the film in Ramoji Film City. Allu Arjun and Brahmaji suffered minor
injuries in this accident.[30]

The film was released worldwide on over 1600 screens on
August 9, 2012.[1] The film has been awarded with ‘U’ certificate by the Central Board of Film
Certification.[31] Gajapokkiri, the Malayalam dubbed version of the film, is scheduled to release on August 17,
2012.[32]

In February 2012, it was announced that popular Telugu film
director-producer Dasari Narayana Rao has bought the Andhra Pradesh distribution rights of the film for an amount of 23
crores.[33] It was also reported that Dasari Narayana Rao will release the film under his banner Siri Media. It was
reported that it was the highest amount ever paid for an Allu Arjun starrer.[34] It was reported in April 2012 that
Ficus had acquired the overseas theatrical distribution rights of the film excluding Singapore and Malaysia. Ficus also
previously distributed Trivikram's Khaleja.[35] In July 2012, it was reported that the satellite rights were sold for
5.70 crores to MAA TV.[36]

Julayi received mixed reviews from critics. Karthik
Pasupulate from The Times of India gave the film three out of five stars and commented that "The movie has enough in it
for Allu Arjun fans to dig into it, the others might not find it as amusing.".[37] Riya Chakravarty from NDTV wrote,
"Overall, the movie caters to all ages. Watch the movie for its witty dialogues and energetic performances.".[38]
Sangeetha Devi Dundoo from The Hindu described the film as "High on energy and wit" and commented that "Julayi has all
the staple ingredients that characterise a Telugu masala entertainer" and concluded that "Brain matches brawn in this
masala entertainer".[39] Y. Sunita Chowdary from Cinegoer praised Allu Arjun for his acting and wrote "Julayi is in a
true sense an action entertainer, it doesn't have bombastic dialogues of mass heroes but you will not miss the
unmistakable focus of the hero in attaining his three goals. Commercially the film should do well but it is not
Trivikram's best either.".[40] Jeevi from Idlebrain gave the film 3.5 out of 5 rating and commented that "Plus points of
the film are Trivikram’s work (dialogues, direction and screenplay), Allu Arjun’s seamless performance and
entertainment value. On the flip side, a few logics and the super-hero orientation to hero character should have been
taken care of.", concluding that "On a whole, Julayi is an intelligent action entertainer with Trvikram’s brand
humor. Go and watch it!".[41] Mahesh S Koneru from 123Telugu gave the film 3.25 out of 5 rating and argues, "Julayi has
a great first half going for it. Trivikram’s stamp can be seen all over it and this half makes for some great
entertainment. A slightly below par second half and unnecessarily over the top sequences spoil the flavour a bit.",
concluding that "Still, Julayi is a good watch overall. Allu Arjun and Rajendra Prasad excel in this film and you can
happily catch Julayi just for them.".[42] Shekhar from OneIndia Entertainment in a positive review concluded, "Watch
Julayi for Allu Arjun's energetic performance, Devi Sri Prasad's music, Trivikram's witty dialogues, Sonu Sood's great
action, Rajendra Prasad's performance and Ileana's glamor. It is a perfect mixture of performances. The film has
everything for the audience of all class and age group."[43][44]

In Andhra Pradesh, Julayi
collected around 6.32 crore (US$1.14 million) on its first day.[45] It was reported that Julayi was Allu Arjun's biggest
opening worldwide collecting over 8 crore (US$1.45 million) on its first day.[46] The reported collections worldwide for
the first five days were around 21.29 crore (US$3.85 million) and it was also reported that the film collections in
Nizam area alone were around 5.01 crore (US$0.91 million) as from August 8, 2012.
Julayi opened very well in USA
and had collected more than $500,000 including premiere shows in its first weekend.[47] Taran Adarsh from Bollywood
Hungama reported that Julayi has collected over $569,436 (3.15 crores) over the weekend in US with the per screen
average for the film being around $12,379..[48]
